This culminating unit was created for Mrs.
Haddock’s 7th grade science students. Students have studied the following topics prior to beginning this unit: Rocks and Minerals, Plate Tectonics, Weathering and
Erosion and Structure of Matter. They will now synthesize all science information they
have learned this year and apply it to the state they live in. Students will have the
knowledge necessary to function as a positive member of society and teach others how
to take care of our earth.
Students will investigate the formation of the geology of Connecticut (involving plate
tectonics, volcanoes, glaciation and weathering), how drainage of groundwater is impacted
by the geology and how human activity can effect water quality. Students will discover
the natural beauty of Connecticut creating a real life trip. They will teach their classmates
about the geology of the destinations they have chosen for their trip. Each group will
also discuss how humans can impact the quality of the water resources in our community with
an explanation of ground water movement. The State Standards that will be the
main focus of this lesson is CT 6.4 and C11,the others listed have already been taught
and necessary for student background information CT 7.3 ,C18,C19,and C20 as well as the
performance skill standards C1,C9and C10.
